The Singer: a showcase of Scottish talent at its best and purest (Fringe review) 5 stars

The Singer is further proof of the immense talent that comes out of Scotland every year. This touchingly beautiful play is a masterclass in writing by Cora Bissett and Jamie Rea, with an impeccable score by Scotland’s own KT Tunstall. It is the moving story of the unlikely friendship between Joe, a deaf songwriter, and Andy, a one-hit-wonder musician trying to piece his life back together.

From the get-go, the stage is presented as a colourful, vibrant world, with the two narrators transporting the audience to Glasgow and introducing our protagonists. Just as colourful are Joe’s oracles, played by Hannah Jarrett-Scott and Petre Dobre, who provide continuous comedic relief and context, as well as extraordinarily portraying a myriad of characters throughout the play. Jamie Rea and Dylan Wood are a match made in heaven. Their banter and genuine affection come across effortlessly to the audience.

The Singer follows in the grand tradition of Scottish creative work that explores the importance of music in fostering creative connection and softness between young men. It becomes a space where they do not have to perform masculinity: Joe finally lets someone read his lyrics and see his work, while Andy emerges as someone who no longer has to keep up appearances. Andy is honest with Joe about his lyrics needing work, and opens up about his daughter and his struggle to be a good father. Ultimately, this is a play about two men who truly see each other and the value each brings to their partnership.

The Singer is possibly the best work I have seen this year at the Fringe. It is a wonderful example of inclusivity, creativity, and a showcase of Scottish talent at its best and purest. It is a celebration of Scotland and its artists, as well as the strong sense of community that pervades this country. Whether it is finally being seen or finally becoming a better version of themselves, Joe and Andy ultimately better each other.

The Singer is at Traverse 1 as part of TravFest 2026 till 30th August
