Lorelle Meets The Obsolete – Remezcla EP (review)

Lorena Quintanilla and Alberto González are the duo behind this experimental psych-rock/ shoegaze project based out of Guadalajara, Mexico. Released as a companion piece to their 2023 album, Datura, this expanded version of the Remezcla EP includes remixes of two additional tracks, ‘Óvalo’ and ‘Arco’, both produced by Invisible Dog (aka LA musician Adam Payne).

Still maintaining the frenetic and cloudy guitar sounds of the original record, which received praise from artists such as Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop, these reimaginings operate from a lighter, more playful place, adding twinkly synths and melodic loops that help tease apart the band’s densely packed production.

Softened, arpeggiated synths with a steady drum beat in ‘Dos Noches’ and distorted electric guitars in ‘Invisible’ build a more synthetic world for this EP, but none of the remixes stray too far from Lorelle Meets The Obsolete’s original compositions. This makes Remezcla a great entry point to the band’s discography, with González himself calling it a stepping stone of sorts into their next musical chapter.

The expanded Remezcla EP will be released on 25th October via Sonic Cathedral
