Nikhita – Solace ‘a soothing breath that says this too shall pass’ (EP review)

Combining the beautiful, unhurried delivery of some atmospheric soul music with an approach based in mediation; this is music made for healing the wounded psyche. Songs address difficult relationships and emotional unfairness with a gentle touch, a smoothing over of slinking bass and stacked harmonies. ‘Lake Karachay’, the opening track, named after the most toxic lake in the world, draws comparison between dumping of trauma and nuclear waste whilst beautiful moments slip by like unnoticed thoughts in meditation.

This feeling underpins the whole EP: the delicate guitar and twinkling background vocals of ‘Insurance’ balance lyrics about someone making you feel second best, Himalayan singing bowls ring in the air above ‘Cleopatra’ as relationship crumbles into bitterness on the ground below.

Embracing the power of music to wash away the pain and a refuge from the demands and expectations of a world constantly trying to define people, this is a soothing breath that says this too shall pass.

Solace is out on 4th April
