The first artist signed to a new label created by Women In Jazz and New Soil, the Glaswegian DJ, producer and linchpin of the modern Scottish scene comes tearing out of the gates, with a propulsive howl of frenetic energy and a drum and bass breakbeat that rattles the walls as much as it does the patriarchy.
‘Better Than Before’ booms and clatters with collaborator Emilie Boyd’s exhortations to anger and inspire, racing horn lines that seem to be continually ascending, and a satisfying squelch of keys straight from the future of your 80s nightclub dreams.
The pace cools a little on ‘Come Together’, with atmospheric arpeggios from Sonedo’s piano and a bit of blissed-out, house-y two-step, but it’s still dragging you out of your seat by your belt with an irresistible groove.
A one-two punch of revolutionary fervour, uniting, motivating, and pointing the counterculture to the heart of the dance floor.
