Single Review: Jutebox Return with ‘Fallout’

The five members of the band Jutebox posing on a narrow, enclosed staircase with blue wooden walls. The band members are staggered at different heights on the steps. The member in the front left wears a black leather jacket over a graphic tee, while the member in the front right wears a black patterned shirt with his arm tattoos visible. Framed posters are partially visible on the wall behind them.

Following a well-received EP last summer and successful Scottish headline tour, Glasgow based, ska/funk quintet Jutebox are back with their first release of 2026.

Originally from Dundee, Jutebox are fronted by Dan Richardson on vocals and keys, Ross Henderson on saxophone, Kai Murdoch on bass guitar, Alasdair Napier on drums, and Alex Thornton on guitar.

‘Fallout’ is a standalone track and draws a multitude of influences, mainly ska, funk, and rock. Richardson’s atmospheric vocals draw comparisons to Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis and James’ Tim Booth; there is an 80s style warmth to the overall sound, but particularly his voice.

Thumping bass and sax create the ska undertones but as the track progresses the lead guitar takes the track into a more classic rock direction. On paper it might seem like it shouldn’t work but it does; it’s beyond catchy and the array of genres are fused together seamlessly.

Jutebox have a busy few months ahead with two singles planned for summer and autumn. The band are also busy on tour with dates in London and Dundee next month and a couple of festival spots including Belladrum in July.

The cover art for 'Fallout' by Jutebox. Set against a black background with a subtle, distressed speckle texture, there is a large, deep red heart split down the middle by a jagged crack. Below the heart, the track title 'FALLOUT' is written in a bold, white, block-style serif font. In the bottom right corner, the band name 'JUTEBOX' is displayed in a smaller, pale grey bubble font.
